INSTALLING THE BINARY VERSION OF OSW FOR LINUX 0. INSTALL THE OSW DISTRIBUTION 0.1 INSTALLING FROM AN RPM OSW 1.1 and above is available as an RPM installation. If your system supports RPMs (RedHat, Mandrake and SuSE include RPM support), it is recommended that you use them. Two RPMs are available, a "binary" RPM: osw-x.x.x.i386.rpm and a "source" RPM: osw-x.x.x.src.rpm To install the binary, type "rpm -i osw-x.x.i386.rpm". If you get a message about a failed dependency, such as libasound.so, you might try "rpm -i --nodeps osw-x.x.x.i386.rpm" and see if it works. To install from the source RPM, type "rpm -ba osw-x.x.x.src.rpm" and be prepared to wait a while. Note that for both binary and source RPMs, you should already have Tcl/Tk and Incr Tcl installed. See section 1.1 for more info. 0.2 INSTALLING FROM A tar.gz DISTRIBUTION NOTE: tar.gz distributions are no longer offically generated, though they can be built from the source code by third parties. If you have not already done so, unpack your OSW distribution into a directory of your choice (e.g., we recommend "/usr/local/lib/osw"). Copy the distribution to the directory, and type the following: zcat osw-x.xx.tar.gz | tar -xf - Where "x.xx" is the version number of your distribution. Edit the file install.sh to reflect the desired directories into which you want to install OSW, as well as the version of Tcl/Tk you are running. Again, see section 1.1 to install Tcl/Tk if you have not already done so. You can then run install.sh to complete the installation of OSW. 1. INSTALLING REQUIRED PACKAGES The following packages are required to run OSW under linux: Tcl/Tk version 8.3 or above and Itcl 1.1 INSTALLING TCL/TK AND INCR TCL If you do not already have Tcl/Tk 8.3 or above as well as Itcl, please install them now. If you have one of the popular distributions of Linux such as RedHat, SuSe, Debian or Mandrake, changes are pretty good that you *do* have them already. If not, RPMs, Debian packages and source versions are available. Visit the Tcl/Tk Developer eXchange at www.scriptics.com for source and binary versions. RPMs are also available from rpmfind.net. Note: OSW requires multithreading support in Tcl/Tk. If you are compiling Tcl/Tk from source, you must use the --enable-threads switch to ensure that multithreading is supported. More info can be found here: http://www.tcl.tk/doc/howto/compile.html. It has come to our attention that some binary distributions of Tcl/Tk are compiled without multithreading support. You can determine whether your distribution has multithreading support by first typing "tclsh", then typing "puts $tcl_platform(threaded)" at the interpreter prompt. If this returns an error message similar to "no such element in array", it is likely that your distribution has been compiled without multithreading support. Obtain a distribution that has been compiled with multithreading support or compile from source yourself (see above). If this command returns a "1", it is likely that your distribution does support multithreading; proceed to the next step. 3. LAUNCHING OSW You can launch OSW from a command prompt by simply typing "osw" To start OSW in "server mode" without a user interface, type "osw --server". More information about server mode can be found in the User Guide. Type "osw --help" to obtain a list of command-line options that are available. A more detail description of the command-line options can be found in the User Guide. 4. START PLAYING That's it. You should be ready to start using OSW now. Have fun!
